Fledglings

So many birds are leaving the nests at the moment but as I passed this tree, I could hear loud squawking from inside. This bold youngster stuck its head out but the others were all showing their yellow and red "gapes": their wide, open mouths to encourage the parents to feed them. I didn't hang around to get better photos: I didn't want to worry the adult birds but it seems likely that they won't be in the nest for long. It is a really important time to stop cats from wandering around and catching the young birds as they learn to fly.
